The new apple trees we planted on 1st March with Woodlands School have blossom on at the moment..
And the garlic planted by Int 1 Biology is doing really well!
Even the potatoes are starting to poke their heads up....

Bee Positive Planting
Rachel, Kate and Tamara in S6 have been working with some S2 JASS pupils on a 'Bee Aware' project. They've made a website highlighting the plight of bees and the important need for their conservation. They've also fundraised to buy seeds and plants that will atract more bees and pollinating insects to our school grounds. I'm sure the bees will be pleased!

Spring Clean at Currie High
On Friday 4 May we had a big community clean up in Roley's Wood as part of Keep Scotland Beautiful's National Spring Clean campaign. We had 35 people helping out; pupils, parents, siblings, neighbours and staff all working together to make Roley's Wood look fantastic. After a huge concerted effort by everyone involved we celebrated our achievements by having a bbq, ably cooked by Mr Hermiston, with special treats, including ingredients foraged from Roley's Wood, prepared by our fantastic Home Economics department.

Driving for Freedom
Women in Saudi Arabia are denied many basic human rights, including being able
to vote or even drive a car. Saudi
Arabia is the only country in the world
where woman are not allowed to drive, but there are signs of support to change
the law from both men and women in the country.
Amnesty International Youth Groups all over the UK are organising a big photo action to show
women in Saudi Arabia
that we support their campaign to overturn the driving ban. Members of our Amnesty International group
have started going around school with big cardboard
steering wheels, with signs in Arabic saying ‘We
support Saudi Arabian women to drive their way to freedom’. We want to take lots of photos of pupils and
staff holding the steering wheels to show their support, and we’ll then forward
these photos to Amnesty and use them in a display at school.

New compost bins finished!
The Leaders of Positive Change and JASS group of S2s and S6s have finished the new compost bins for the school. These will be used to hold gardening waste from the school grounds as well as compostable waste from Home Economics department and staff bases.
First we had to clear the area from all sorts of rubbish... |
...then cut all the recycled pallets to the right size... |
We had to make sure the ground was all level too... |
The lads and the completed compost bins! |

Wild food forays
Over the last few weeks, S1 classes have been discovering the delights of wild food found for free in our very own Roley's Wood during their Home Economics classes.
tasting dandelion leaves (washed of course!) |
not every one likes wild garlic! |
a blind taste test between shop-bought leek and wild few-flowered leek from the woods |
back in the classroom, we cooked up tasty treats including dandelion flower bhajis, cheese and wild leek scones and potato salad with wild garlic |
the nettle soup went down a treat! |
